Bento cake flavours: guide to the 10 that actually sell

If you’re starting to sell bento cakes and can’t decide which flavour to lead with, here’s a quick side-by-side of the ten we make on order. Each of them earned its place — no filler on the list.

The starter three: what to lead with

Oreo — best-seller. Chocolate sponge, cream cheese, cookie crumb, cherry coulis. Deep flavour, forgiving assembly, ingredients from any supermarket. If you’re taking your first order, take an Oreo order.

Raffaello — the one that gets ordered for anniversaries, weddings and 8 March. Vanilla sponge, coconut-almond cream, whole Raffaello candy on top. Higher cost of goods than Oreo, but the price you can charge is 30–40% higher.

Red Velvet — cocoa sponge with the signature red crumb and cream-cheese frosting. Instagram-friendly cross-section: buyers want the video slice. Requires a real red food colouring, so first order costs a bit more.

The chocolate three

Snickers — chocolate sponge, salted caramel, peanut layer, chocolate mirror. Rich, filling, ordered as a “gift for men” more often than any other flavour. Peanut butter needs to be smooth, not the crunchy kind.

Ferrero Rocher — chocolate-hazelnut. The most premium chocolate flavour in the collection: Nutella-style filling, whole Ferrero Rocher on top, gold accents. Cost of goods is highest here.

Cinnabon — cinnamon roll turned cake. Warm-spice sponge, cream-cheese frosting, thin caramel spiral. The only “cosy” flavour in the collection — sells best in October–December.

The fruit three

Pistachio-Raspberry — the “grown-up” flavour. Pistachio sponge, cream-cheese with real pistachio paste, raspberry confit. Pistachio paste is the expensive part; a starter can substitute with pistachio praline (cheaper) but it changes the flavour.

Poppy-Citrus — a lighter option for people who don’t want chocolate. Poppy-seed sponge, orange curd, light citrus cream. Great for spring orders.

Cherry Chocolate — classic “cherry-cognac” flavour re-cast as a bento. Chocolate sponge, cherry compote, cream cheese. A Ukrainian bakery staple, works well for older clients.

The wildcard

Pina Colada — coconut sponge, pineapple confit, whipped white-chocolate cream. Summer only: the flavour reads flat in cold weather but is unbeatable at a beach-adjacent celebration.

Which one to make first

Look at your first order, not your favourite. The person paying you has a picture in their head — meet it. If they haven’t specified, offer Oreo. It’s the flavour with the highest conversion rate and the least room to fail.

Costs, portion sizes and pricing for each flavour are detailed in the cost breakdown article. Storage timing per flavour type is in how long a bento cake lasts.

What’s actually in the PDF

Every flavour on this page has a full recipe card in the PDF collection: exact grams for 12 cm (with a conversion table for 11 diameters from 10 to 30 cm), the specific cream and cocoa brand that gives the intended texture, oven temperature and time per size, common mistakes, and the timing so you can pull an assembly plan for a Friday delivery. If you’re going to sell more than three of these, buying the collection pays back on the second order.
